Whether your children are starting school for the first time or your little ones are moving up a year, September can be an emotional month for the whole family. Here are some helpful hints to make it a fun and exciting experience for all.

  • A new environment and routine can be overwhelming so if you haven’t already, ask if you can both go in and meet the teacher as well as have a tour around the classroom and school. Find out where they will need to hang their coat and bag, and whether you a hot meal is provided. Point out the toilets and playground too, so your child knows where to find them.

  • Ask the teacher about the daily routine then talk it through with your child so he or she knows what to expect.

  • Visit your local library and borrow some books about starting school. Reading them together will help your child become familiar with the general set-up.

  • Walk or drive to school before they start so you know the route well and have an idea of how long it will take.

  • Buy the uniform and any extra equipment early on so you’re not leaving it to the last minute when sizes start to run out. Make it a fun shopping trip with your child and emphasise how grown up they are becoming.

  • Make sure your child goes to bed early the night before they start and have all their things ready by the front door. You don’t want to be searching for that elusive lunch money at 8am the next day.

  • If you are feeling emotional on the big day, try not to show your child how you are feeling, as they will pick up on any anxiety. Act confident and positive and they will be too.

  • Children get very tired and hungry after a whole day at school so when you get home, let them have some quiet time and a healthy snack.
