Household MOT

Riva radiator, £196, Aestus

It’s easy enough to say that you’ll get round to all those niggly jobs around the house before winter comes, but it’s surprising how quickly it does come around. With a little careful planning, you can be prepared for all eventualities.

  • If you have an open fire, now is the time to have the chimney swept. It’s amazing how booked up sweeps get in November and December so do it now before the rush. Visit www.chimneyworks.co.uk www.chimneyworks.co.uk for The National Association of Chimney Sweeps approved sweeps in your area.
  • Turn the central heating on for a few hours and make sure all the radiators and pipes are working properly. You don’t want to suddenly find out that they don’t on a freezing cold day.
  • Any outdoor painting or maintenance should be done now before the weather gets too cold or wet. This is especially important for chimneys and roofs.
  • Elan home office,
    £2,000, Hammonds

  • Repair any windows and window frames and clean out gutters and drains. This should be done regularly as leaves will start to block them up over the coming months.
  • Cut back overgrown bushes and hedges in the garden while the weather is still dry and repair fences and gates.
  • Check whether your shed will withstand another winter and if not, try treating it with wood preserver.
  • Sort out all your paperwork and recycle any unwanted papers and magazines.
  • Organise your wardrobe and dig out those woolly jumpers, which may need a quick refresh in the washing machine ready for winter.
