New Year’s Resolutions for the home

Have you considered what your New Year’s Resolutions might be? They don’t necessarily have to involve cutting back and exercising – they could easily be applied to the home instead.

Teddy Tidy, £9.99; storage units,
from £89.99; toy organiser,
£34.99, Blooming Marvellous

Make it your mission to have a complete clearout of clutter around the house. If you tackle it room-by-room it needn’t be so daunting. The golden rule is not to start another room until you have finished the previous one. Have one bag for rubbish and one for recycling and pop the radio or a CD on while you work.

Give bedrooms an update by rearranging the furniture and giving bookcases, wardrobes and drawer units a fresh lick of paint. Consider painting part of the wall in your child’s room with blackboard paint. It will encourage them to draw, write and use their imagination.

Go organic by choosing natural products for you, your children and the home. There are so many companies now who produce everything from natural shower gel and toothpaste to organic cotton clothing, Fair Trade nursery mobiles and natural laundry liquid.

It’s never too early for a spring clean. Get the children to lend a hand and make it into a fun afternoon as you pretend the vacuum cleaner is a snake chasing them around the house and the dusters – if used – will lead them to some buried treasure at the end.

Farm duvet cover and pillowcase,
£40; border, from £3; gingham curtain fabric,
£10 per m, Noolibird

Tackle those wardrobes and chuck anything that you haven’t worn in the last year. Take a good look at items that make you feel good about yourself and make a note to search for similar pieces in the January sales.

If you haven’t already got one, make space for a home office or study area. Whether you work from home or just need somewhere to do the paperwork and help children with their studies, a quiet desk area is a must. Look for unused space under the stairs or in the corner of the dining room. You’ll find a wide range of space-saving furniture in stores like The Pier, Ikea and MFI.

Get the garden ready for spring by doing all those jobs you never got round to before Christmas. Do some weeding, plant bulbs and sweep away the leaves. If the weather’s not too frosty, you could even paint the shed or fence in a cheery blue or green shade. Look for specialist outdoor paints at DIY stores.
