Remember, remember, the 5th of November. This special night is unique for us Brits as fireworks are set off all over the land and everyone huddles round a roaring outdoor fire to keep warm. It sounds strange when you think about it, celebrating the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, but it’s a great excuse for getting friends and family together for some hearty hot food and a good old gossip. Children adore it too, as they get to stay up after dark and draw swirly shapes with their sparklers in the sky
Whether you’re holding your own party or going to an organised local event, follow the firework code to ensure safety at all times:
- Children should be within sight – never left alone
- Keep fireworks in a closed box and follow the instructions on each one very carefully
- Light all fireworks at arm’s length and stand well back
- Never go back to a lit firework and never put them in your pocket
- Never throw fireworks
- Keep pets indoors
- Use only BS 7114 fireworks, as these are the only ones guaranteed safe!
- Take care when using sparklers. Always supervise children who are using them and make sure they hold them at arm’s length, away from other people
- Have a container of water handy, large enough for used sparklers
- Bonfire night treats could include baked potatoes, hot dogs, roasted chestnuts, bangers and beans, toffee apples and hearty vegetable soup
- To drink, how about a fiery fireworks punch? Mix up a bottle each of ginger ale, orange juice and pineapple juice then serve with chunks of crunchy apple floating on top
